The Black Forest Woodworker is Helko’s flagship axe, originally designed for the famous Black Forest region in Germany. It is the essential tool for an experienced woodsman. Its compact size offers great versatility, serving as both a reliable work axe and a dependable companion for travel and outdoor tasks. Featuring Helko’s traditional Rheinland pattern, the Black Forest Woodworker performs exceptionally well as a cutting tool while still handling moderate splitting work. This compact, robust axe is ideal for various tasks, including felling small trees, splitting firewood, clearing branches, and preparing firewood. It comes with an adjustable 6–7 oz American leather edge protector. The head is made of high-quality C50 carbon steel, hand-forged, heat-treated, and oil-hardened to 53–56 HRC (Rockwell), hand-ground and marked with the Helko crown logo. The handle is crafted from American hickory, class “A,” individually selected for grain orientation and density, and finished with boiled linseed oil.
